Staying Connected While Distancing

Staying Connected While Distancing

Many countries have been asking their citizens to protect each other through social distancing. This week, the United States followed suit. Social distancing, as a way to show care, feels counterintuitive. How can we unite together, while being apart? Below are a few ideas of ways to remain emotionally connected as we strive to create physical space.

We are in this Together

Knowing we are not alone in our experience can feel connecting. As citizens of this world we are all working together to mitigate the impact of this virus. Our fellow travelers of this Earth are doing their part by social distancing. It’s a responsibility shared by our peers in China, Italy, Germany, and Iran to name a few. We are not alone.

In Europe people are reporting eating meals on balconies so they can be with others. A video has been circulating of people singing a song from windows in Italy that translates to “hug me.”

Caring for Others

Taking a moment to help our neighbors. Small gestures make large differences. You can walk dogs, run errands for someone who is at high risk, or simply call a loved one to enjoy each other. You can also donate money to organizations in need. The Chicago Food Bank is offering boxed meals to families impacted by the school closures. Meals on Wheels Chicago is continuing to feed our seniors. These are only two of the many wonderful organizations in our city that are helping during this time. Reach out to causes you feel strongly about and find out how you can help.

Caring for Ourselves

I have saved the most important for last! We must all strive to remain connected to ourselves. Despite any changes that may come, do not forget your own needs. Once you know what you need, prioritize it. Many things feel uncertain but your values and dreams are the same. So is your need for rest, food, movement, and joy. Make them happen!

Onward!
